Android L Update Features: Galaxy S5, Xperia Z2, Moto X and HTC One M8 to Receive New Features

A number of premium handsets, including the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, Moto X and HTC One M8 will soon be receiving Android L firmware, which offers eight features that are meant to enhance the camera, battery life, processing speed as well as the user's general experience.

Some of the features of Android L firmware, as revealed by Android Police, Geeknizer and ARS Technica, are listed below:

Camera API and DNG Support

Android L will offer a new camera API, which supports camera RAW-style image as well as Digital Negative. At the same time, it will offer the freedom of photography by enabling smartphones to preserve original image details, such as DSLR cameras.

Native Battery Saver

The earlier versions of Android do not incorporate a native battery or power saving application, which force users to download third-party apps. However, Android L will make a native app available under the Battery menu and it can manage CPU performance, brightness level of the display, and animation implementations.

Latest Runtime

In addition to Dalvik, the Android Runtime is the latest runtime which promotes smoother app loading and function, as well as more rational battery consumption. Now, users can allow apps to run under ART simply by going to the Developer Options. Nevertheless, the apps should support the runtime to facilitate its effect.

OpenGL ES 3.1 Version

Android L will incorporate a latest support for video graphics that endorses computer shaders. When it is applied, the feature enables the graphics processor to operate even on non-graphical things like physics calculations and enables it to complete tasks related to graphics more effectively.

Project Volta

This is actually a combined improvement under the Google project having the same name. Project Volta is designed to screen battery life by resolving which apps or services are depleting power and a tracking record for the existing remaining time to charge as well as the extent to which the battery will last as it discharges.

Enhanced Audio Experience

Android L will offer an enhanced audio support counting low latency input and output, superior resampling, 96 KHz sampling rate, 24 bits per sample, floating point for sampling, USB audio support, upgradings on audio and video sync, plus API enhancements for developers.

Bluetooth 4.1

Android L firmware will support Bluetooth 4.1 adding many enhancements counting resolution on interference with LTE radios having the same frequencies as well as more stable connection between devices. This update eventually does not need a new hardware component, but a new certification from FCC for upgrading the necessary software drivers.

Currently, Android L is under Developer Preview phase enabling developers to optimize their applications prior to the official release of the firmware.
