Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update Nexus 7 Release Date Arrives; OTA Update or Manual
Following a short delay, the Nexus Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is now being made available as the Nexus 7 LTE Android 4.4.4 KitKat for users who want to update their tablets manually.
In early June, Google released two new Android 4.4 KitKat updates. First, it released the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update, a substantial bug fixer, followed by its Android 4.4.4 KitKat update a few days later. Both the updates were, and still are, bug fixers intended to resolve major Android 4.4.2 KitKat problems.
In fact, devices in the Nexus line up were among the first to receive both Android 4.4.3 KitKat as well as its replacement, Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Nevertheless one Nexus Android 4.4.4 KitKat update was not made available for some Nexus 7 owners.
Though the Nexus 7 Android 4.4.3 KitKat update was released for the Nexus 7 LTE, Google did not roll out an Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the device. And several weeks following the release of Android 4.4.4 KitKat in mid-June, Google did nothing to make the situation clear for people that purchased the cellular data version of the company's existing Nexus 7 tablet.
Eventually, after months of silence, Google has released a new Nexus 7 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update - the Nexus 7 LTE Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. Currently, the update is not rolling out Over-the-Air, but is available for manual installation. If you are capable of manually installing software updates, you can find the factory images as well as the binaries for this new Nexus 7 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update on Google's website.
Greenhorn users who are not familiar with the manual install process are advised to wait for the arrival of the Over-the-Air version of the update. So far, Google has not made any announcement regarding an OTA update, but it is possible that one will arrive quite soon. In general, OTAs are rolled out within a few hours, days or at worst, weeks after the arrival on Google's website.
The Nexus 7 LTE is the last Nexus device to receive Android 4.4.4 KitKat and it arrives just weeks before Google's rumored Android L release for Nexus devices and other Android compatible devices from select manufacturers.
It is speculated that Android L, which will replace Android 4.4 KitKat sometime this year, will arrive either in October or November together with a Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 tablet from HTC. It is rumored that these two devices will arrive within the next few weeks, denoting that older Nexus devices like the Nexus 7 LTE should be in line to receive the Android L update in the near future.
