Android 4.4.2 Kitkat Update on Samsung Galaxy S3, Mini Version Will Not Be Released, Company Says

Samsung has officially announced that the non-LTE Galaxy S3 model and mini version will not receive KitKat because they only feature 1GB of RAM, which is not enough for it to run all of Samsung's TouchWiz additions.

In March, the rumor mill started churning out reports that the previous flagship of Samsung, which has now been far superseded by the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5, would be updated with Android 4.4 KitKat software.

However, it has since been determined that the international variants of the handset did not possess the memory needed for the upgrade and, hence, they would not receive the latest software.

While the US variants of Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini smartphones have 2GB memory system, the international versions of the company's handset only have a 1GB memory system. Though it is not possible to upgrade the international versions of these handsets to Android 4.4 KitKat software, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface provides extensive bulk to their operating system.

In fact, Samsung has officially confirmed to SamMobile that the leak is accurate and there will be no Android 4.4 KitKat update for Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 Mini.

A spokesperson of Samsung Mobile told SamMobile, "The Galaxy S3 and S3 Mini 3G versions come equipped with 1GB RAM, which does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade. As a result of the Galaxy S3 and S3 Mini 3G versions' hardware limitation, they cannot effectively support the platform upgrade while continuing to provide the best consumer experience," adding, "Samsung has decided not to roll-out the KitKat upgrade to Galaxy S3 and S3 Mini 3G versions."

However, those using the 4G version of the Galaxy S3 will be lucky enough to receive the Android 4.4 KitKat software update, as that upgraded model includes the same 2GB of RAM as the US variant.
