Amish Girl Whose Family Refused Chemotherapy is Doing Well According to Her Lawyer
Earlier this year, Sarah Hershberger was diagnosed with leukemia and agreed to two years of chemotherapy treatment. Her and her family were told by doctors that she would live and would be cancer free within two years if she followed the chemotherapy treatment schedule. In June, her parents decided to pull her from chemotherapy treatment because it was making her sick. The hospital sued the family because they feared that she would die if she did not receive the correct chemotherapy treatment. The Amish family fled from Ohio and the United States and moved to Central America to attempt to cure her cancer with natural remedies and herbs.
Isaac Keim, their lawyer, told AP, "What kind of gift would that be, if we could get this resolved and they can come back home without a fear of being in contempt of court or having their child snatched away. We're praying every day that this thing can be resolved and get their lives back together." He said that Sarah was a "vibrant, healthy girl" now after all of the natural treatments.
Amish families are generally not against modern medicine, even though they reject many aspects of modern society.
Do you think that the Hershbergers were right to take their child out of doctor approved chemotherapy? Even though it seems that Sarah is in remission, do you think that it was irresponsible for them to run to Central America? Let us know what you think in the comments!
