'American Idol' Top 9 Preview: Song Theme Revealed
American Idol season 12 just announced the song theme for the Top 9 performance show. On Wednesday night the remaining 9 contestants will have to choose songs from the John Lennon and Paul McCartney song catalog. Whether you like it or not, on March 20th (8 p.m. - 10 p.m. ET) watching American Idol means your listening to The Beatles.
While many were excited when the catalog was released to Idol seasons ago, many viewers have unfortunately been left with a little more to desire after the amateur singers try to tackle some of music's most legendary songs.
With the remaining Top 9 primarily all ballad singers, viewers can expect to hear slowed-down classics such as Lennon's "Imagine", McCartney's "Let It Be" or George Harrison's "Something". Singers like Kree Harrison and Candice Glover have proven savvy with song choice, while dark horses Devin Velez and Burnell Taylor have struggled when it comes to finding the perfect song for their voices.
Though The Beatles theme does feel a bit exhausted by now, some past contestants have reenergized the night. No one will forget season 7 Idol David Cook's rendition of "Eleanor Rigby". Being a huge Beatles fan, and president of the anti-David Cook fan club, I was surprised to say the least, to be very impressed by the performance. Hopefully we get more David Cook than fellow season 7 finalist Kristy Lee Cook, whose version of "Eight Days A Week" may have paid off for a still healthy McCartney but sent Lennon rolling in his grave.
What Beatles songs do you think the Top 9 should sing?
Tune into American Idol 2013 season 12 at 8/7c on FOX to find out!
