Amanda Knox Trial Latest News Update: Ex Boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito Wants Separate Trial
Amanda Knox and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito have been convicted of the brutal murder of British national Meredith Kercher on Nov. 1, 2007, but now, Sollecito is demanding a separate trial.
Kercher was murdered on Nov. 1, 2007 in the home she and Knox shared in Perugia.
Nearing almost 7 years since the case started, and after the two were acquitted on Oct.3, 2011, Knox and Sollecito were once again found guilty as the Italian court dismissed their plea for acquittal.
Knox and Sollecito will have to avoid extradition and spend the next 25 to 30 years of their lives in prison. They will have to be tried once again on March 25, 2015.
The two have been deemed inseparable as portrayed by the media these past few years, but now, Knox's former Italian lover is dismissing himself from the case and is seeking a separate trial.
Sollecito is allegedly demanding that his and Knox's case be tried separately in hopes of keeping himself from being imprisoned. Sollecito's legal defense team is reportedly working for Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation to overrule his case and order a retrial.
Furthermore, Sollecito's lawyer claimed that her client's statement last January, when they were convicted, was "unfairly influenced" by Knox's statement.
According to Independent, Sollecito allegedly admitted that he was not with her the whole night when Kercher was murdered- contradicting the statement of Knox that they were together, which means their alibis no longer match..
"She gave me an alibi. I had nothing to do with it," Sollecito claimed.
"Only a madman or a criminal would change versions, and I'm neither mad nor criminal. There's proof that I was at my place and I was watching Japanese cartoons," Sollecito said.
Despite seemingly throwing Knox under the bus and jeopardizing her case, Sollecitio believes that his ex-girlfriend is innocent, "I always believed, and still believe, that Amanda Marie Knox is innocent."
