Aaron Hernandez Case: Former Patriots Player Indicated as Possible Gunmen in Murder Hearing
Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez may have been the alleged gunman in a drive-by shooting in Boston in two years ago that killed two men and left another person injured, according to newly released court documents.
The claim is enclosed in a search warrant document filed in late June that allowed detectives to inspect a Toyota 4Runner that investigators believe Hernandez used the morning both Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado were killed at a stoplight.
Detectives believe the 4Runner, which Hernandez acquired from a Rhode Island car dealership in exchange for publicity work, was involved in the murder, according to the warrant, which was revealed this morning.
"There is also probable cause to believe that Aaron Hernandez was operating the suspect vehicle used in the shooting homicides of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado, and may have been the shooter," wrote a detective in the warrant.
Investigators discovered that night Abreu, Furtado, and three other men exited a nightclub known as Cure Lounge on Boston's south side and were sitting at a stop light a couple of blocks away when somebody drove a silver or gray sports utility car and shot the victims. Eyewitnesses labeled it as a Toyota 4Runner or Nissan Pathfinder with Rhode Island plates. Abreu and Furtado were killed nearly instantaneously, and one of three men in the back seat received a gunshot wound in the arm. The other two men were not injured.
Hernandez, the former Patriots Pro Bowler, is currently incarcerated without bail pending the trial regarding the June 17 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the killing of Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who was courting the sister of the former NFL star's fiancée.
The Toyota was discovered parked in the garage of a house owned by Hernandez's uncle after his association in Lloyd's death.
