In the previous "The Affair" season 3 episode, the characters were caught in an accident as they go home after a bar session. Scotty died in the incident, with Noah and Helen reportedly responsible for what happened.

The truth is set to prevail, according to "The Affair" season 3 star Joshua Jackson, who plays Cole Lockhart in the series. In his interview with HNGN, Jackson said that the discomfort was trying to combine the two stories and figure out where the truth was. The actor also mentioned that the season would see a place where people came to a sense of resolution.

For Jackson, an important mission of the series was the sense of discomfort the audience should feel. The actor suggests that the series should stimulate the audiences' minds think about various probabilities, which would force them to a point of deciding what felt the most right.
