FOX News Host Gretchen Carlson 'Gets Real' in New Memoir; Says Sometimes Success is Best Found Through Failure [INTERVIEW 1]

Gretchen Carlson

Gretchen Carlson spends plenty of time giving her audience the facts on her FOX News show, "The Real Story."-- so it's no surprise that Gretchen's new book is told in her characteristically candid and straightforward style. However, "Getting Real" isn't her typical subject material. This book is a memoir about Gretchen Carlson's own life. Carlson spoke to BREATHEcast about dream-chasing, inspiration, and staying authentic.

Ironically, the cover photo for the book features Gretchen wearing an outfit that wasn't hers -- but her stylist's. Featuring the 1989 Miss America winner in all black, with a no-nonsense expression, the image is strikingly serious; a departure from the pastel-clad and always agreeable commentator that was a fixture for years on "Fox and Friends."

But Gretchen Carlson thinks the cover photo is perfect. "There are really serious issues in the book, so the picture is fitting. I'm not just talking about happy-go-lucky things... I'm talking about a lot of failures and mistakes that I made along the way."

Addressing the motivation behind penning a memoir of both success and failures, Gretchen revealed, "The whole reason is so that people will feel inspired to go for their dreams. Sometimes through failure we end up appreciating our successes so much more."

The book details Carlson's upbringing as a preacher's granddaughter growing up in a small Minnesota town, which she says contributed to her "humble" sense of self. Speaking to the concept of her public identity, Gretchen told BREATHEcast, "I wanna be real obviously. Not only in my personal life do I want to stay real and true to myself; professionally, I hope that my viewers know that I'm giving them the real story."
