Why Is Cristina Yang Leaving Grey's Anatomy? Sandra Oh Leaving in Season 10 Finale Climax

Actress Sandra Oh previously announced that that she will leave ABC's hit drama series "Grey's Anatomy" after Season 10 ends on May 15, 2014. Oh is best-known for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on the critically acclaimed medical drama series.

Oh along with Ellen Pompeo (who plays as the main protagonist Dr. Meredith Grey), Patrick Dempsey (who plays as Dr. Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy), James Pickens, Jr. (who plays as Dr. Richard Webber) and Chandra Wilson (who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey) have all been on the show since the show debuted in 2005. Now Oh bids the series and her memorable character farewell.

"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," said Oh to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. (Cristina) wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey's writers to think of why she's going to go."

Oh recently went on social media to express her feelings about leaving the successful ABC primetime show.

"Shooting one of our last scenes. :(," wrote Oh via Twitter on April 11 along with a photo of her and her on-screen husband Dr. Owen Hunt (played by actor Kevin McKidd).

"I've gone through a lot of therapy over this," said an emotional Oh to The Hollywood Reporter. "I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, [series creator] Shonda (Rhimes) took me aside and said, 'What are your thoughts?' I said, 'I'm ready.'"

Rhimes also told The Hollywood Reporter what it was like to work with Oh for a decade on the hit series.

"One of the best days of my life as a writer happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition and forever changed the course of Grey's Anatomy with her brilliant, nuanced portrayal of Cristina Yang," said Rhimes to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Over the past 10 seasons, I have been made better by Sandra's trust, faith and friendship, and I can't quantify how grateful I am for her collaboration on a character we both love so deeply. This year is going to be bittersweet for us -- we're both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang, and then we're going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey's Anatomy will once again be forever changed."
