'The Legend of Zelda' Wii U Release Date News: Title Delayed to 2016, Possibly Cross-Platform

The launch date of the much awaited 'The Legend of Zelda' has been pushed back to 2016. Earlier, the game was scheduled to be released for Wii U in 2015, but in March this year, producer Eiji Aonuma announced that the game would not be ready for release on the planned date. The postponement of the game's release may also be a hint that it will be a cross-platform title, available both on Wii U and the upcoming NX.

Quoting a report in IGN, Christian Today reports that Aonuma has said that the release date of 'The Legend of Zelda' has been moved to 2016 with a view to enable the team to develop as well as make the title flawless without any pressure of an impending deadline on their shoulders. Owing to this delay, Nintendo did not present the game at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

A latest report in Digitimes also hinted that Nintendo is pushing for an early release for the company's upcoming console - Nintendo NX. As of now Nintendo has not released any detail regarding the specs or capabilities of the NX, but it is expected that the company plans to release the console in July 2016.

The Digitimes report further states that the Japanese electronic entertainment giant is planning to commence the final production of the console this October and subsequently speed up mass production in May or June next year with a view to make the NX available in the market by July.

Meanwhile, fans are speculating that 'The Legend of Zelda' for the Wii U will also be released as a launch title for the NX, especially if the game rolls out in the second quarter of 2016.

However, this is not the first time that Nintendo is doing this, for the company earlier delayed the release of 'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' for the Gamecube, as it also released a Nintendo Wii version of the game.
