Superman 'Man of Steel' Soars to #1 at Box Office with $125 Million Through Opening Weekend

The highly anticipated new Superman movie Man of Steel did not dissapoint at the box office this weekend making $113 million in its opening. Then if you add the $12 million from Thursday night screenings, that brings the total through opening weekend to $125 million domestically.

The Warner Bros. superhero action film had original box office expectations of $75-130 million, so they definitely reached their goals and almost surpassed highest expectations.

"They finally got the Superman formula right," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "Superhero movies really are the bread and butter of the summer box office. The fact that Iron Man 3 has the biggest opening of the year so far and Man of Steel has the second biggest opening of the year just proves that."

The new Superman flick also knocked off Toy Story 3 for June's biggest opening. Toy Story 3, the Disney-Pixar film made $110.3 million opening weekend in 2010.  Superman Returns, which opened in 2006 starring Brandon Routh got $52.6 million for opening weekend.

Man of Steel also earned $71.6 million for 24 territories worldwide and is set to open up in 27 more territories this weekend, including Russia and China.

Rounding out the weekends top movies were This Is The End which made $20.5 million, Now You See Me which did $10.3 million, in fourth place was Fast & Furious 6 with $9.4 million and rounding out the Top 5 was The Purge with $8.2 million.
