'Spider-Man: Homecoming' News, Cast Rumors: Batman Out; Iron Man To Provide Movie Star Power

News and rumors previously reported that Michael Keaton, who played the original batman in the 1989 film, would be appearing in "Spider-man: Homecoming." But the best-laid plans almost always go awry and that means no dice for the 64-year-old actor.

But there's good news for fans of the webslinger as the Tom Holland-starrer gets a much needed star boost with the appearance of no less than Robert Downey Jr. himself, who will reprise his role as Tony Stark or Iron Man.

According to Collider, the decision to sign on Robert Downey Jr. appears sound considering the relationship between Tony Stark and Peter Parker in the "Captain America: Civil War" where they fight on the same team against Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes.

In Marvel comics, Tony Stark also designed the Iron Spider Armor, which Peter Parker later discarded when he switched side during the "Civil War" saga.

Previous news reports alleged that Michael Keaton would play Adrian Toomes aka Vulture. If that panned out, the actor would be playing another winged iteration after playing the title role of "Birdman" last year.

Vulture-along with Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, Dr. Octopus, Electro and Sandman--is part of the Sinister Six, whose sole purpose is to bring down the webslinger. The rumors, however, didn't say if the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" will feature the Sinister Six as the main villains.

In other news, Metro reported that Iron Man's appearance in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is met with warm welcome from fans. But it has bigger repercussions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"The appearance of RDJ in the film is poignant as it suggests an ongoing relationship between Marvel films (owned by Disney) and Sony film (who make/distribute Spider-Man films)," it said.
