'Son of God' Movie Producers Cuts Out Distracting Satan Scenes to Focus on Jesus, 'The Devil Gets No More Screentime'

"Son of God" is set to hit the big screen Feb. 28 and the anticipated film is reportedly cutting out the character of Satan to focus in more on Jesus.

The Bible mini-series had record shattering numbers when it aired on the History Channel last year. Millions tuned in to see the accounts of the Bible portrayed on television and the audiences were raving. It was not until the series aired the account of the life of Jesus that the mini-series began to draw attention for all the wrong reasons.

News outlets and the Twitter world lit up with how they thought the actor who played Satan looked a lot like President Barack Obama. Some even implied that series producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey did it intentionally.

This week Hollywood Reporter revealed that producer Downey and her husband Burnett decided to cut the scene.

"Someone made a comment that the actor who played the devil vaguely resembled our president, and suddenly the media went nuts," Downey said to the media outlet on Monday. "The next day, when I was sure everyone would only be talking about Jesus, they were talking about Satan instead."

"It gives me great pleasure to tell you that the devil is on the cutting-room floor. This is now a movie about Jesus, the Son of God, and the devil gets no more screentime," Downey told the Hollywood Reporter.

When the devil controversy first exploded last year, both Downey and her husband struck back.

"This is utter nonsense," Burnett and Downey said in a joint statement. "The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several biblical epics - including satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our president."

Downey told Oprah, "For Satan to be the point of conversation was really heartbreaking. ... We love the President; we have nothing but respect for the president. We felt somehow hijacked."

The film will be released on 20th Century Fox. The 10-hour mini-series needed to be cut down into two hours of film that focused on Jesus, and Downey stated they went out of their way to leave the controversial Satan out of the film.
