Richard Dawkins' Atheist Ways Changing? Anti-Religion Scientist Claims He is a 'Secular Christian' at Speaking Event

Atheist Richard Dawkins has made it well known throughout his career as a public figure on his views of Christianity and God, but now it appears he wants to be known as something else, a "secular Christian."

According to Charisma News, he recently made a speaking appearance at the Hay Festival to talk about his memoir, An Appetite for Wonder. It was there that he expressed his certainly unique view of himself.

"I would describe myself as a secular Christian in the same sense as secular Jews have a feeling for nostalgia and ceremonies," he said, reported the Telegraph."But if you don't have the supernatural, it's not clear to me why you would call yourself a minister. But I am a secular Christian, if you want to call me that."

Dawkins has been debated for years and has seemingly taken great pleasure in trying to disprove God. A scientist in the field of biology, he has become more known for his brutal assessment of all things religion rather than his many accomplishments.

"'The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully," he wrote in his book, The God Delusion.

With this sort of view it is puzzling to even equate himself as a "secular Christian." In has been said that Dawkins sometimes refers to himself as an Agnostic because he cannot prove without certainty the existence of God, but he also finds no evidence of Him. However, his opinion is definitely swayed toward one side as he equates the matter to proving if the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy is real.
