John Lackey was supposed to be an afterthought on this Red Sox pitching staff, fighting for a starting spot all offseason. His numbers this season tell a much different story. Lackey has an ERA of 2.79 with a WHIP of 1.14. However, the last time Lackey faced the Rays, he only last 4 1/3 innings, allowing 9 hits and 5 runs [all earned]. The Rays have been one of the only teams this season to get to Lackey in his current form.

Alex Cobb has been very good for the Rays as well, with a 2.39 ERA. Most great starting pitchers get better as the game progresses. Cobb is no exception. When you look at Cobb's numbers, he struggles early in games but quickly figures out which pitches are working and not working that day, and adjusts accordingly. Cobb has certainly asserted himself as the ace in a Tampa rotation that's seen David Price on the DL and a struggling Jeremy Hellickson. The Rays bullpen needs all the help they can get posting a 4.11 ERA on the season [starters, 4.33 ERA]. Cobb has started twice already against the AL East leading Red Sox and is 0-1 [4 earned runs in 13 innings pitched].

Tune in for tonight's Al East division rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays on ESPN at 7:10 PM ET.
