Qualcomm 810 Chipset News: Semiconductor Manufacturer Hopes to Make Up Samsung Loss With LG, Xiaomi

Notwithstanding the fact that Samsung has decided to use its own Exynos 7420 octa-core SoC rather than Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, the American multinational semiconductor manufacturer is hopeful that it will not be affected much, as LG Electronics and the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi have decided to use its chipsets for their respective devices.

According to Christian Post, Qualcomm vice-president (Marketing) Tim McDonough recently told Trusted Reviews, "We don't win every handset design with every OEM and that's normal for us. If you take a big customer, we might have nine devices running in parallel. If they've got 10 and we've got nine because we've lost one, you still have a very deep relationship and you are still mutually invested in each other's success. If you miss the timing window for a particular handset or the timing window for a particular customer, or you take too long going from geography to geography rolling it out, that can be a make or break thing for them"

While Qualcomm may have its long-time partner, which is among the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, the company is expecting to thrive by collaborating with Xiaomi, LG Electronics and other, which have been remarkably successful in 2014. While Xiaomi has been ranked the third largest smartphone manufacturer globally, having 12.5 percent market share during the 2014 period, it has also been the largest smartphone maker in Q4 2014 in terms of device shipments, surpassing both Apple as well as Samsung.

In fact, Xiaomi now wants to repeat that success by releasing of its Xiaomi Note Pro and Xiaomi Note - both devices powered by Qualcomm processors. At the same time, another South Korean tech giant, LG Electronics too has had a good run during 2014, selling 59.1 million units during the year. Most of the devices shipped by the company during 2014 comprised the LG G3 smartphone, which is also powered by Qualcomm's chip.

Talking about his company's future McDonough said, "It's a competitive market and people have to choose their path - such as do they vertically integrate. Some people have done that in the past and it's had varying degrees of success depending on who has tried to do it, some people have succeeded, some people have failed."

Currently, Qualcomm is reported to be working on its Snapdragon 820 'system on a chip,' which is being manufactured on the Taipan architecture. The upcoming chipset is expected to surpass the Krait chipset of the company in performance as well as energy efficiency.
