PS4 Pro Patch News, Update: Sony’s 4K, HDR Patches To Be Free

Sony console players can rejoice, as the tech giant won't charge consumers for PlayStation 4 Pro patches for HDR and 4K features.

In a statement, as cited by Polygon, a Sony representative said that the company would not charge consumers for the patches. According to the publication, Sony was asked to clarify whether the update only affects Sony-published games, though the company has yet to provide a statement.

The aforementioned details are on par with the ones from Absinthe Games founder Jack Sipich. In a statement, as cited in a NeoGAF post, he mentioned that they were not allowed to charge players for patches or pro feature updates, adding that the fees included anything they had to swallow to update their past games.

"The Internet can calm down. There is nothing we can do to leverage pro features or patches with price. Nothing," Sipich said.

In line with the PlayStation 4 Pro patch, existing Sony games could also get patches for improved performance. In an interview with Game Impress Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Masayasu Ito said that the 4K HDR patch for existing titles would be different for each title, adding that it would depend on the thinking of each license.

About the Sony games completely supporting PlayStation 4 Pro, Ito said that first party titles the company has put out were certainly going to support both 4K and HDR. He added that other games would support 4K, but not all games would support both 4K and HDR.
