Pokemon X and Y Features Transgender Trainer in the Game, 'The Power of Medical Science is Amazing, isn't it?'

Pokemon X and Y may feature a subtle hint to a transgender character, according to the original translation of the Japanese text.

The English text reads, "Yes, a mere half year ago I was a Black Belt! Quite the transformation, wouldn't you say?" However, the original Japanese text read, "Only half a year ago, I was a Karate King. The power of medical science is amazing, isn't it?"

According to Kotaku, "Karate King" can be translated as "ruler" or "monarch," but does not necessarily identify as male. For the game's English translation, it was changed to "Black Belt." However, in this instance, the remark is a little out of the blue and seemingly random.

"It appears this female Pokémon NPC was indeed originally a male who underwent a gender reassignment via medical science. This was purposely made a little less clear in the English release, but it wasn't written out of the script entirely," wrote a blogger on LegendsofLocalization.

Recently, it was announced that XY would be getting its own cartoon anime series in English on January 18.

"Pokemon the Series XY" will be the fifth rendition of the popular anime cartoon since its debut in the late 90s, reports Bulbapedia. The show was first demoed back on October 19 2013 as a sneak peek when the first two episodes were previewed.

The series protagonist, Ash Ketchum, will be returning with his trusty side kick Pikachu to explore the Kalos region of his world. The trio of Team Rocket bad guys, Jessie, James, and Meowth will be returning as well.

"It's time for Ash and Pikachu to set off on their adventures in the Kalos region! Along the way, they're joined by some new friends-a genius inventor named Clemont, his little sister Bonnie, and Serena, a Trainer on her first journey. In between Gym battles, Ash and friends will be exploring this unique region, meeting all kinds of new Pokémon, and looking into a fascinating new Pokémon mystery! Tune in to Cartoon Network on January 18, 2014, for the series premiere," the trailer for the show reads on YouTube.

There is another anime in the franchise that has gained much praise from fans of the game, Pokemon Origins, which is currently only in Japan. It debuted on October 2, and closely follows the story of the original games for Gameboy.
