New Apple TV Release Date News, Rumors: Device Projected to Launch in 2015?

To the disappointment of many, the new Apple TV was not unveiled at Apple's October 16 Keynote event, as many had hoped it would be. However, techies are still in good spirits as they hope the device will be unveiled before the end of 2014.

For those that may not know much about Apple TV.

It's a small (less than 10 cm squared) set-top box that plugs into a television and connects wirelessly to the Internet, thereby providing access to movies, TV shows, and iTunes music. Apple TV lets the user rent films from the iTunes Store or subscribe to Netflix and access their massive library. Apple TV also provides access to YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, and NowTV.

The current model dates back to March, 2012, pretty much making it a dinosaur, since its hardware is also over two years old. It is powered by the same A5 chip generation used in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2. Again, the Apple TV is showing its age, despite the mass amount of apps it has.

There have long been rumors of an updated and upgraded version of Apple TV in the works. On August 17, one of the biggest Apple Premium Resellers in Slovakia claimed that the new version of Apple TV would debut the following week. August 24 came and went with no sign of the new Apple TV.

Earlier in the summer, Apple gave away iTunes vouchers with sales of the current Apple TV in the US and the UK. That led to speculation that Apple was trying to get rid of the old Apple TVs in order to make room for the new ones. There is no sign, however, that Apple is running low on the current models which is what would be happening if it were trying unload them.

Apple stopped giving away the vouchers at the end of September, which led people to believe that the new Apple TV would debut on October 1, but that didn't happen.

On that note, the experts at Mac World believe that the new Apple TV won't become available until October 30 at the very earliest, and probably won't appear until sometime in 2015. According to some Apple employees, the reason for the delay is problems negotiating with US cable companies like Comcast.
