Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon has been teasing gaming communities with Tweets about a new "Mortal Kombat" title. During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) a few weeks ago, NetherRealm Studios finally announced the name and the release date of the upcoming game.

The sequel is named "Mortal Kombat X" and is set to arrive in 2015.

Accompanying the announcement is an official trailer which can be seen on YouTube. According to the flavor text of the trailer, the game is fueled by "next-gen technology," which has critics and gamers speculating that the game will come out on the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.

NetherRealm Studios has gamers excited to play the new Mortal Kombat due to their success with the 2011 "Mortal Kombat" reboot and the 2013 "Injustice: Gods Among Us."

In a news update by Kotaku, the game is being developed for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, PlayStation 4, and the PC. The game will be featuring gameplay similar to that of "Injustice: Gods Among Us." It will also be the first Mortal Kombat game that allows players to interact with the stage environment.

The news release also left interested parties with the following description of the game:

"Mortal Kombat X combines cinematic presentation with all new gameplay to deliver the most brutal Kombat experience ever, offering a new fully connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy. For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game's most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together."
