Mikeschair's 'All or Nothing' Singer Wonders Why Christians Don't Have a 'Battlecry' Anthem for the Lord (INTERVIEW)

Curb Records contemporary Christian band Mikeschair released their new album All or Nothing on Apr. 1 and lead singer Mike Grayson said he and his band mates had to face the music and really give God their all.

The 29 year-old spoke candidly with Breathecast about his new album, new marriage and his inspiration behind the catchy new music.

Grayson and the rest of Mikeschair have been a band for 10 years including their years in college from which they began at in Belmont University.

He described their new record as a "roller coaster" going on a personal faith journey. "Our music, is our heart cry to the Lord," Grayson said.

Grayson explained the moment that prompted him to decide to give God his all, although he was already doing Christian music for years. "I've been through the cycle of questioning everything in my life," he said. "I think me getting married a year ago, getting to that point of making that kind of commitment, that really kind of pushed me over the edge in general."

The young singer accredited making such a major commitment of marring Molly Reed, (1/2 of Christian duo City Harbor) to helping him realize he was still holding on to things in his personal walk with the Lord.

"They're so many things in our life coming at us that are trying to tell us to commit, whether that be a relationship, or financially, or commercially or health or whatever...And there's so many people saying let's be all out our all in, and I thought, 'why in our Christian life don't we have that kind of battle cry when it comes to the Lord?'"

Grayson desired that passion, and fire inside of us that said 'I'm all in, I'm sold out and this is what it is.' "Unapologetic," he exclaimed.

On the new album the band's unique pop sound along with anthemic choruses captivate the listener as their truthful lyrics provide the total package.

Grayson said the band writes music according to how they aspire to be. "A lot of the songs that I write are not necessarily how my life looks but it's how I want my life to look. It's kind of a prayer." The singer said All or Nothing is "literally that prayer."

Grayson described the song "This is our Moment" as being the band's "huge and epic" song. He also said his favorite song right now is "People like me."

The front man wrote the song about his family and their testimony. "It's a really personal song that came out of a really personal place. It almost took me 15 years to write that song," he said. The catchy tune features American Music Award winning singer Matthew West. "That song in general right now and probably forever will be a really important song to me."

Grayson said he strives to always stay sincere with his music to avoid getting caught up in a redundant formula. "Every time I sit down to write I really challenge myself to be honest. There is a temptation to always kind of fluff stuff up a, little bit," he said.

"I lean more towards that raw emotion... I want people to be able to feel like he gets it," he continued. "We're not perfect, we're not living on a cloud, we're in the trenches as well, and you can hear that in the songs we write."

He stated All or Nothing is the band's happiest album so far."I've been in a season of joy, you can hear that on this record with songs like 'Loved by You.""

Grayson concluded that regardless of successes they do it all for the people. "The reason I do Christian music is because I love to connect with people. I love to connect with the Lord, and I love to connect with people and I think the best way to do that is to be honest in your music."

Since Mikeschair's first release in 2009 they have been nominated for 12 Dove Awards, and have garnered five Top 5 radio singles.
