Michael Schumacher Coma Condition Update: 5 Months in Coma; Fears Could Be Permanent

It has been five months since Formula 1 seven-time champion Michael Schumacher was put in an induced coma following his skiing incident at the French Alps in November 2013.  No signs of positive progression have been seen aside from brief moments of responsiveness.  This has given way to speculation from some medical experts that the athlete might remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.

In a statement by Philippe Azouvi, neurological professor, he said that Schumacher's long journey to recovery is a sign that the accident brought serious brain trauma.

"The only thing we can say is that, statistically, 30 percent of patients recover from a severe brain injury, mild impairments affects 50 percent of them, and 20 percent of them suffer from severe disabilities and remain dependent on constant help," Azouvi told Focus Magazine.

Schumacher's condition is not easy for his immediate family and friends, although his wife Corrinna and manager, Sabine Kehm, remain faithful that the car racing icon would recover from the mishap.

"We are deeply touched by all the messages to get well soon for Michael which still are being sent. That gives us strength. Thank you all so much!" read the family's statement released in January.

Chief physician Dr. Andreas Zieger of the Evangelical Hospital said that despite Schumacher showing little to no improvement, each patient's case is unique and that the final effects remain unknown until he wakes up.

An insider to Schumacher's family claims that Corrinna, 44, is experiencing denial caused by her husband's extended coma condition.

"She feels that the family communes around his bed side, pulsate their hope and love to him, and that of the millions of fans worldwide who share that faith. She can't express defeat because that would be the end of her," the source told The Sun.

Fans from all over the world continue to show support for Schumacher's full recovery through their messages posted on social media websites.
