Joaquin Guzman Death Hoax: Dead News Confirmed As False, Drug Lord Is Alive

Joaquin Guzman Lorea has recently become the target of an Internet death hoax, which led many to believe that the Mexican drug lord had died in his cell. However, these reports have been deemed as false, as he is still very much alive.

The hoax was first reported by Huzlers.com, with an article entitled "Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzman Found Dead In His Cell!," that partly read:

"This Wednesday afternoon Joaquin Guzman Loera was found lifeless inside the Altiplano prison in the State of Mexico. According to early reports, the body of the Mr. Guzman , 56, was found today 'with dents all over the body' after missing a roll call of prisoners, said in a statement by the government."

The article spread throughout the Internet, and even received several thousands of likes on social networking sites like Facebook. However, many didn't realize that Huzlers is a satirical website with a disclaimer that reads:

"Huzlers.com is a combination of real shocking news and satirical entertainment to keep its visitors in a state of disbelief," it says in its About Us section on the bottom-right on every page.

Guzman, also known as "El Chapo," is the leader of the international drug cartel Sinaloa, which operates in the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia. The drug lord is currently in prison, after being captured on Feb. 22 by marines at the Miramar condominium in Mazatlan.

Guzman also has multiple U.S. criminal indictments pending against him. The man who was once considered as "the biggest drug lord of all time" has been indicted in several states including Arizona, California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Florida.

Despite having several charges in the United States, Mexican government said Guzman will not be extradited. Some Mexicans, however, have expressed doubts about Mexico's justice system and its ability to prosecute Guzman, since the man already bribed his way out of a top-security prison in 2001.
