The Catholic Church in Italy is offended by the portrayal of Jesus, Mary and saints as Barbie and Ken dolls. Toy makers Marianela Perelli and Pool Paolini state that their work is not to offend anyone and they enjoy representing everyone's religions with the exception of Muslims.

Pool and Marianela are getting a lot of heat for their vivid illustrations of Christian figures, including Jesus on the cross, Mary and others. According to their Facebook page, the two sometimes use their artwork to make light of historical, political, and religious figures.

Italy's Catholic bishops are furious about the controversial artistic depictions. Italian website SIR agreed with the bishops and condemned the collection by saying, "What is the difference between provocation and bad taste?"

The Argentinian artists, Marianela and Pool, have produced a total of 33 dolls of different religious figures for a show named "Barbie, The Plastic Religion," which opens in Buenos Aires on Oct. 11. They said on social media they avoided doing the Islamic faith because they could not find any pictures of Mohammed.

According to HuffingtonPost, the Catholic bishops urge parents to explain to their children why the dolls are not a gift and to tell them the true meaning behind the dolls.

Do you find the Barbie and Ken dolls offensive or are they just figurines to be added to a collection? Leave your comments below.
