Jennifer Hudson, 'Walk It Out' Singer Says Her Faith in Jesus Christ Helped Overcome Family Tragedy (VIDEO)

In a new interview, former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson recently revealed how her faith helped her overcome the tragedy that claimed many members of her family six years ago.

"We always said: 'If He brings you to it, He will bring you through it,'" said Hudson to the Observer, "There would be no point in faith if it wasn't tested. My mother always told me no matter how negative your life seems to be, you must always look for a positive. That is what I believe a woman of faith should do."

Hudson was on tour on October 24, 2008, when her ex-brother-in-law, William Balfour, murdered her mother Darnell Donnerson, her seven-year-old nephew Julian King, and her brother Jason after Hudson's sister Julia (his wife) left him.

"I have definitely seen the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows," said Hudson, "You don't know how strong you are until you are placed in that kind of moment."

As a result, Balfour received three life sentences after he was convinced of triple homicide on July 2012.

"I'm not letting him [Balfour] off the hook for anything," said Hudson to Oprah Winfrey on the Sept. 9, 2012 episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter."

Hudson told Oprah, "I feel like, for the most part, it's not his fault. It's what he was taught. How was brought up. We tried to offer love, but he was so far gone, he couldn't even see that. A lot of things came out (during the trial) that we didn't even know about from his upbringing ... He never had a chance. He never had a chance, had he had the love that my mother gave us, or the background that some have, then he would have stood a chance. How could your heart not go out to that?"

Hudson also revealed that when she performs on stage, she is sharing her testimony with the entire world.

"What do they say in church? Sing from your heart, because you are singing to God. You know, when I used to sing those solos in church I would go through every line and ask the director: 'What does this mean? What are we trying to convey here?' If you can't feel the emotion of a song, how do you expect anyone else to? It's like a testimony in that way," said Hudson to the Observer, "The world is a broad place. Even on my first album I was like, 'Isn't there more to sing about in the world? Or to talk about? There is so much more out there to portray...'"

Hudson is currently dating her fiancé David Otunga (a lawyer and WWE superstar) and they both have a son together named David Daniel Otunga, Jr.
