A recent report made its way around the web about Hillsong New York that claimed an openly gay couple was leading the popular church's choir. Although Senior Pastor Brian Houston released a statement putting those rumors to rest, NY's pastor Carl Lentz is now saying they are not in leadership but they are still serving in the church.

In a media release shared on August 4th Pastor Houston penned a note addressing the salacious rumors titled 'Hillsong Church Statement by Senior Pastor Brian Houston.' He further went on to affirm that Hillsong believes "Marriage is between a man and a woman" in a full blog. Read that HERE.

New York Pastor Lentz is now going a step further making sure that the LGBT community understands that they are welcomed at his church. The couple in question, Josh and Reed were both featured on the current season of "Survivor" and were involved in leadership but after announcing their engagement were reportedly asked to step down.

Although the couple are now not in a leadership role, an interview on Religion News Service between the couple, Lentz and reporter Jonathan Merritt, reveals that they do still actively serve in ministry.

Lentz said that his priority was to "make sure that these amazing guys weren't mishandled or mistreated."

"Me and my wife, Laura, are deeply involved in Josh and Reed's lives," Lentz told RNS, "We have had ongoing, face-to-face discussions about God, sin, life, and Jesus because this is what you do in a church."

The two men are very grateful for Lentz and his wife's approach and believe that Hillsong is their "home church."

In an in-depth piece with RNS Lentz really spoke about his stance on having people from the LGBTQ in his church. He admits that his way may not be the answer but he does not believe the people who criticize his church have the answer either.

"We would rather be misunderstood and look 'messy' to some in the Christian community that do not agree with us and help some, than appease people that think differently and reach none," he stated.

Lentz disturbed with the treatment of gays and lesbians by the church maintained that it's the churches job to preach and love the people and the Holy Spirit's job to convict hearts.

He went on to say, "What concerns me is that it seems like more people are concerned about our 'method,' despite the fact it's working, than they are the young gay teens that are killing themselves, and the LGBT community at large that has found zero refuge in our 'churches.'"

Lentz being sure not to go against scripture, such as 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, said the church is meant to be the lighthouse for the people regardless of the lifestyle.

"We do have areas of church life and leadership where complete agreement in doctrinal issues are paramount. And we are clear on this...but I want people to have room to hear, experience family, digest what are often difficult truths," he continued.
