‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Box Office News: Top Grossing Film in 2014, Sequel Coming [SPOILERS]

New reports are claiming that the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' film topped the U.S box office in 2014 with $332.8 million in total ticket sales.

The film was released on August 1 and earned more than $300 million last year surpassing 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' sales. However, this was unexpected since 'Guardians of the Galaxy' featured lesser known Marvel characters.

With the success of the first film, it is not a surprise that 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is in the works. James Gunn will still direct the sequel, and he has recently shared a few details about his vision for the next film especially about its characters.

"Really, it's just about walking forward in an elegant manner. When you go forward with a group of characters, that means you have to go forward. And going forward means you're understanding these characters in a new way, you're developing a new kind of story about their lives and who they are and where they're going. And if you're doing that, if you're walking forward, then you can't just repeat what you did before. That's going backwards. That's not understanding the character," Gunn said.

The director continued that the favorite characters in the first film may not stay as fan-favorites in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'. This is because the focus is to explore and develop the characters' personality.

"The Guardians are going to continuously change. I think that some of the characters are probably worse than what we think they are, and other characters are better than we think they are. It's going to be interesting to learn a little bit about that as time goes on," Gunn revealed.

As for the plot, the director confirmed that the storyline has been finalized.

"Well, I'm really inspired. The whole story is written. I'm very excited about it. And that's where it is. But the story point for me is, in a lot of ways, the most difficult thing. I feel like it's pretty strong. It's constantly shifting, but I feel like it's pretty strong. I'm excited about it," Gunn said.

Fans will have to wait for awhile before they discover the changes made to Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Rocket and the rest of the characters. As it stands, 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' will launch in theaters on May 5, 2017.
