Florida Killer Claiming to be Jesus Murders Uncle Saying He Wants to 'Take Everyone Home'

Phillip Justin Markland was arrested on June 23 for the murder of his uncle Thomas. What sets this case apart from other homicides is that the Florida man allegedly claimed to be Jesus Christ.

Thomas called the police when his nephew began to behave erratically, which included Phillip claiming to be Jesus. Then the situation became a nightmare as the 911 operator reportedly heard someone yelling "Shut your ... mouth" before hearing gunshots, according to the warrant document disclosed on June 24.

"[Phillip Justin Markland] went into a bedroom, acquired a rifle and excessively shot and killed the victim. The initial gunshots would have disabled the victim [Thomas Markland], but the fatal gunshots were fired into the victim's body when he was facing away from the defendant [Phillip Markland]. The physical evidence suggest(s) that the victim was shot and killed in an execution-style manner," according to the affidavit.

Despite the fact that the deceased victim (Thomas) shot his nephew first, the case against Phillip Justin Markland killing his uncle (at a family gathering in Highlands County, Florida) on June 15 is not being viewed as self-defense due to younger Markland's excessive use of force. Markland reportedly shot his uncle almost 25 times including multiple times in the head, which led to Thomas' death.

"The defendant [the nephew] advised the dispatcher that he shot the victim (his uncle) in the 'head, chest, everywhere,'" according to the sworn statement, "The defendant said he 'unloaded,' his whole magazine on the victim and then threw his weapon on the couch.

The defendant has a history of using a man-made drug named K2, but is no evidence whether or not he used the aforementioned drug that day.

"[Phillip Justin Markland] repeatedly stated he was Jesus Christ and soon enough he was going to 'take everyone home,'" said an eyewitness at the family gathering, according to the official declaration, "Defendant said he 'wanted to apologize for what he was going to do next,' however, 'could not speak of it now.'"

The witness also told the local police that everyone who attended the family gathering feared for their safety only moments before Markland murdered his uncle Thomas.
