Emery's Toby Morrell Discusses the Christian Tactic of 'Scaring the Hell' Out of Non-Believers (BLOG POST)

Toby Morrell, lead singer of rock band Emery, and co-founder of Bad Christian, wrote a blog about Christians focusing too much on condemning people to Hell. Toby feels often times mentioning Hell to non-believers does more harm than good.

The singer shared his own experiences growing up in a very conservative church that his father pastored. Everything was about the fire and brimstone and how if you did not repent, you were going to hell.

Toby said this caused him to pray out in desperation daily every time he did even the smallest things. "God, please forgive me. Please forgive me, God. I am so sorry. I will never do it again. Please forgive me. I don't want to go to hell. God, I am so sorry. Please forgive me," he wrote.

"No joke. It was like having obsessive compulsive disorder and I could not stop repeating the mantra. I now see this as absurd and extremely detrimental to actually knowing Jesus," he shared.

This caused Toby to feel as if God hated him because he was always sinning, and this was a struggle he faced alone because he believed he was the only one. "I actually thought that since every message was about going to Hell, that if people knew I had sinned, they would be extremely disappointed and might not love me either."

Something is hard to admit for Christians, and admittedly for Toby is the fact that people will be going to Hell. Only those who are saved will get to spend eternity in Heaven with God. However, Christians are not supposed to scare people into going to Heaven.

"We've made Hell a scare tactic. Scare tactics are just that. They are tactics that people employ to scare someone into doing what you want them to do. Does that sound at all like what Jesus did?" he wrote.

Toby references the scriptures that talk about Hell being for the lowest of lows of sin, but also references cutting your own hand off if it causes you to sin. Sin is not just reserved for the wicked. (Follow up with scriptures: Revelation 21:8, Mark 9:43, and Matthew 10:28).

"What do these tell you about whose going to Hell? How many of you reading this right now are liars or have had some form of sex outside of marriage? If you've lied, or hooked up with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or even looked at pornography at some point then these verses apply to you," he wrote. "How many of you Christians have lusted? A good amount of you are probably going to lust, whether it's pornography or just "taking a second look' this week."

He goes on to say that none of us can can know what heaven and hell are going to be like, but we have to believe they are real. By telling non-believers about either of these places without further expressing a relationship in Christ is detrimental.

"I just want people to stop focusing on Hell and focus on Jesus. I want us to quit thinking about where God is not and start showing folks where our God is. Show how the knowledge of Him has affected us so deeply that we are no longer the same," he continued.

Toby makes an argument about Christians not needing to worry about going to Heaven or Hell. According to some of the articles comments there are people who disagree, but it does not mean anything stated was wrong. Toby is looking at a different side of the coin.
