Ellie Holcomb Uses God's 'Marvelous Light' to Escape Internal Darkness and Doubt; 'Felt Used, Discarded, & Unloved'

Ellie Holcomb

Ellie Holcomb recently spoke about the meaning behind her song "Marvelous Light" and how Jesus' love will always overcome "shame" and "perfectionism."

The Dove Awards' New Artist of the Year spoke to NewReleaseTuesday for their 'Behind the Song' segment and explained how her second single is drawn from a character in "The Wingfeather Saga." She said this character is always trying to hide his past from people he loves.

"There's a scene in the second book where all of his secrets and all of these things he's ashamed about are exposed in front of his family who he loves and other people as well. I remember reading it and my shoulders tensed up and my neck was tight," she said to NRT, "He wrote that he moved about his days with wonder and peace, because he found that his whole story had been told for the first time and he was still loved."

She continued, "I just wept after reading that. Hello, my name is Ellie Holcomb, and I am a recovering perfectionist. I spent most of my life thinking that following Jesus was me being good enough. I looked perfect on the outside and was falling to pieces on the inside."

Holcomb further explained that being "both fully known and fully loved at the same time" is only something Jesus can provide himself. Her life became about being 'good enough' for Jesus instead of having a relationship with Him. "I was a believer who had no freedom, and not a lot of peace. All of a sudden, I came out of hiding and into the light of who Jesus is and what He did for me. I found a place of acceptance in the middle of my brokenness."

The scripture verse Holcomb relates to the song the most is 1 Peter 2:9 which is about God calling His people out of darkness and into the light to serve Him.

"I tried so hard to be good and to love Him. At the core I didn't believe His love would be enough for me. In my heart, I told Him thanks but no thanks. What I did is try to put my worth and identity in guys. Most people didn't know the unhealthy level that was in my life. Doing things my way got me into some dark and destructive places. I felt used, discarded, unloved and unworthy," she said to NRT.

She said her life is not defined by "the healing of Jesus." Holcomb is no longer in "pain" and suffering within herself.
