Dustin Kensrue Shares Mars Hill Church Experience on Bad Christian Podcast; Thrice Singer Reveals New Solo Album Details

Thrice frontman Dustin Kensrue was on the Bad Christian Podcast to talk about the future of his band, his current solo work, and explain a bit about the chaos surrounding Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill.

The popular rock band vocalist became the worship pastor of Mars Hill church's Bellevue campus after Thrice took a hiatus. After serving for a year or so and releasing a worship album, The Water and The Blood, Kensrue stepped down in light of the growing controversies surrounding the church.

Two of the podcast's co-hosts, Toby Morrell and Matt Carter, also served at Mars Hill church, albeit at different times. The three then began to break down what it was like to do ministry there, and wanted to specifically here from Kensrue as he had a high position.

"It's very easy to make a caricature about it," said Kensrue of BCP. "It overshadows all the good that came out of it."

Since leaving Mars Hill, Kensrue joined a smaller church back in California, and had just got involved with the worship team there.

Carter and Morrell then stated that they are always being asked about Driscoll and what happened at the church. They wondered in Kensrue experienced the same thing. "Most people are careful not to dig in and be nosey," he admitted, before joking that Thrice fans must be more polite.

"I learned a ton from being in Mars Hill...I'm kind of taking that with me," he admitted. "Something that Mars Hill did really well was having an eye for detail..." This however, was also a bit bad in the sense where everything was more of a performance because of expectations of excellence.

Morrell shared his similar experience with Mars Hill and said there was always something he could "not put my finger on" when he was there.

With new opportunities and experiences in church and doing worship, Kensrue said "I don't want to bring all of my Mars Hill brokenness with me."

The "Image of the Invisible" singer also spoke about Thrice, which can be read in the first part of this article here.

As far as solo work, Kensrue just finished recording a full-length record, which is a follow up to 2007's Please Come Home. It is called Carry the Fire, and he will be doing some touring for it around the April 21 release. The album speaks on the light in the darkness, and holding on to humanity. "I hate that you have to wait when you make something" he shared about the anticipation of the album coming out.

He said the album is more full band than acoustic folk, and recorded the entire album himself.
