Doctor Who Season 8 Release Date: Premiere Air Date Will See 'Exciting, Disturbing' Debut for New Doctor

Doctor Who, which has accrued thousands of fanatical followers worldwide, begins its eight season or "series" in summer of 2014. What do we know about the totally new Doctor that we'll be introduced to this time around?

After the demise, or "regeneration" of Matt Smith we get to see a totally new actor playing the infamous time-traveling scientist in season 8. This time the producers of Dr. Who have cast Peter Capaldi, known mainly for his roles in British television such as "The Thick of It" and  "Torchwood: Children of the Earth."

Mark Gatiss told the Digital Spy in a recent interview: "Matt was sublime and I was very sorry to see him go, but it's also great to have a change - as it has always been with the Doctor."

He also referred to a difference in characteristics between the new actor and past incarnations.
"Peter has a very different energy to Matt Smith and to David Tennant," he said. "He's older which changes everything - it's amazing what a change does!"

According to Gatiss, the installment of the new Doctor the Tardis brings "a whole new set of rules."

"The Doctor's always the Doctor - but you can have a lot of fun playing with people's expectations. Everyone knows how the previous Doctor would react in any given situation - and now you just don't know!"

In an interview with Dr. Who Magazine, Stephen Moffat warned that the doctor may be "mad and dangerous and difficult," as some of the first incarnations of The Doctor have been.

Sources say that the new season of Dr. Who will not be split into two parts but will run straight through.
