Church Rallies Around 5-Year-Old Girl with Rare Cancer, 'Her Faith is Great. She has Prayed for Healing'

Sara Duncan is 5 years old and battling neuroblastoma, an uncommon and possibly lethal childhood cancer. In America, there are approximately 400 to 600 cases annually.

Lately, many people attended a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at Sara's church, Trinity United Methodist Church in Blythewood, South Carolina, to send prayers to Sara. The charity raised roughly $4,000.

"Love you, get well soon," wrote 11-year old Jackson Davis, a fellow member of her church, with a purple felt-tipped pen on a board filled with devotions and good wishes.

Numerous people wore emblems with a purple dancing lion, a logo church member Kathy Rhodes created in homage to Sara's favorite song, "Roar," an anthem to bravery by pop singer Katy Perry.

"We're thankful we live in a community with such great support between the church, the neighborhood and the Blythewood community coming together to help us out," said Sara's mom Michelle Duncan in an interview regarding Sara's support base.

Sara is the youngest of the Duncan's three children and has survived a major procedure to eliminate an abdominal solid-mass tumor, with a series of chemotherapy, stem-cell removals, and implants from and into her body.

Sara is expected to have more radiation therapy, and is spending several weeks in the infirmary in the future. She has been going to both the Palmetto Health Richland Children's Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina lately.

The married couple are grateful the neuroblastoma was found early when they discovered she had a stomach-ache in September.

"We feel that God has a path for us, for healing, and He's been really good to us so far. He's put the right doctors in place, the right medical team in place," said Michelle as she wiped away her tears outside the fundraising event in honor of her daughter.

Michelle then explained young Sarah's faith.

"Sara knows what is happening," said Michelle adding, "Her faith is great. She has prayed for healing, and she knows that God is going to heal her. She's a fighter. She doesn't complain. She doesn't like needles, but I don't know who does."
