Bluetooth 5 Specs News: Technology Promises Longer Range, Faster Speed

The Bluetooth 5 is now available and the company behind the technology promises end-clients of faster speed and longer range in the effort to further boost the Internet of Things experience.

Mark Powell, executive director of Bluetooth Special Interest Group, said in a press statement that they are trying to revolutionarize the way people experience the Internet of Things.

"Bluetooth 5 continues to drive this revolution by delivering reliable IoT connections and mobilizing the adoption of beacons, which in turn will decrease connection barriers and enable a seamless IoT experience," he explained.

"This means whole-home and building coverage, as well as new use cases for outdoor, industrial, and commercial applications will be a reality," Powell added. "With the launch of Bluetooth 5, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of IoT developers and consumers while staying true to what Bluetooth is at its core: the global wireless standard for simple, secure, connectivity."

Apparently, Bluetooth 5 has four times the range of its predecessor, twice the speed and eight times the broadcasting message capacity, according to the website. There's also wireless co-existence across different wireless techs. This capacity will really help mainstream smart homes, which more and more manufacturers are buying into.

The Bluetooth 5 will piggyback on the install base of the company. There are now more than 10 billion devices that uses Bluetooth in one form or the other. This new update ensures that no interference is exerience when connecting to other devices with its low-energy output and basic signature.

"The introduction of Bluetooth 5 will create new opportunities in various verticals of the IoT market by reducing complexity and cost," said Andrew Zignani with ABI Research in a statement.
