Ozzy Osbourne, aka the Prince of Darkness, is back with his original band Black Sabbath for the first time since 1978, and the group's first single is called "God is Dead?"

It is easy to see why some Christians or people against the stigma of heavy metal and a band like Black Sabbath can quickly get up in arms about a song called "God is Dead?" However, it is important to note the question mark in the song title. It is more of a rebuttal to a statement rather than an actual question. It is as if someone declared "God was dead" and Black Sabbath responded with, "God is Dead? Really?" Taken in this context the band is in their own way acknowledging the existence of a creator.

However, upon listening to the song the meaning becomes a bit different. The point of view becomes that of an agnostic having an inner struggle with himself. "The voices echo in my head/Is God alive or is God dead?/Is God dead?" the chorus rings out.

Osbourne is asking a question that many Christians and non-believers alike have perhaps struggled with at some point or another in their walk, "Is God real, does He exist?" This song poses the same question.

He follows the sentiment with a thought provoking verse about sin and evil on the Earth, and how the emptiness it brings changes perspective.

"Rivers of evil/Run through dying land
Swimming in sorrow, they kill, steal, and borrow
There is no tomorrow/For the sinners will be damned
Ashes to ashes/You cannot exhume a soul
Who do you trust when corruption and lust, creed of all the unjust,
Leaves you empty and unwhole?"

Mike Ross of GigCity, offers an interesting point and mentions the band's 1971 song, "After Forever." Back then Ozzy sang, "Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say if they knew you believe in God above? They should realize before they criticize that God is the only way to love." It appears that despite everything going on around them, he had a grasp on a Biblical truth no matter chaotic the world around them was. Now he appears uncertain, but certainly believes "God is alive."

It is well documented throughout the band's life and Ozzy's career away from Black Sabbath that these members have gone through some tumultuous times. Ozzy has a history with drugs and alcohol, curses like a sailor, and has bitten off the head of his fair share of animals. These things aside, he is putting to light an important topic in today's world. It is a question that needs to be asked, and then responded to with a definitive answer that points to the cross. The only resolution the singer offers is, "But still the voices in my head/Are telling me that God is dead/The blood pours down/The rain turns red/I don't believe that God is dead."

"I don't believe God is dead," then ends the commentary and the song is over. After almost nine minutes of music, Ozzy does not find a 100 percent answer, but rather looks at the world around and decides God is real. It is a slightly disappointing ending, but overall, a step toward righteousness. It concluded by leaving Ozzy searching for the answers to confirm his belief.

From marketing standpoint, it was a good move for Black Sabbath. Right now the "hot topic" is proving God is real. With movies out such as, "God's Not Dead" and "Heaven is For Real," this song helps push along the healthy dialogue on the subject matter. There will always be a debate as to proving God's existence, but anytime a conversation can be had about the living God, it is a step in the right direction.
