'Big Hero 6' Release Date & News: The Inspiration Behind 'Soft Robot' Baymax

'Big Hero 6' co-director, Don Hall was inspired by a visit to Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, where visitors can discover various types of robots, from snake-bots to crocodile-bots to bot swarms - to the inflatable robotic arm that inspired 'Big Hero 6' adorable robot, Baymax.

For those that may not know, Disney's latest 3D animated film, features a robot not hard and made of metal, but a soft robot resembling bags of gas, but is there really such a thing as a "soft robot?"

"It really became apparent when we saw the soft robotics that that would be our ticket to putting a robot on the screen we had never seen before," Hall explained in a CMU news release.

In 'Big Hero 6', robotics genius Tadashi Hamada invents Baymax, a sort of hybrid between a snowman and the Michelin man as a caretaker-to which his younger brother Hiro uses to fight a villain who plans to use the technology for nefarious purposes.

"Their vision is very specific: You're going to be taken care of by a humanoid robot. And you don't need a big honking metal monster to do that," CMU robotics professor Chris Atkenson said.

While "hard" robots are capable of using pistons and gears to move and function, Atkenson's creations utilize air pressure or lightweight artificial muscle.

The inflatable robotic limb patterned for Baymax's soft, gas filled body was the brainchild of postdoctoral affiliate at Harvard Wyss Institute, Siddharth Sanan.

While Baymax is clearly a fictional character, both Sanan and Atkenson think that soft robots will be something seen in the future.

Soft, flexible robots are being studied upon by roboticists across the globe for use in care-taking, rescue, as well as other everyday tasks.

According to NBC, "'Big Hero 6' may be a fantasy for kids today, but give it a few decades, and they might be buying a Baymax to help around the house."

'Big Hero 6' premieres in theaters on Friday, November 7.
