Becky Hammon News: NBA's First Female Coach Leads Spurs to Summer League Title

There's no doubt the San Antonio Spurs would have loved to have won in June, but after surrendering a 3-2 series lead on their way to being eliminated in the Game 7 of the first round by the Los Angeles Clippers, they will have to settle for winning at everything in July.

The Spurs were the hands down winner of free agency with the acquisitions of All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge, as well as former All-Star David West. They also resigned key players Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, while convincing Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili to re-sign on the cheap. And on Monday, their summer league squad won the Las Vegas Summer League title.

Second-year player Kyle Anderson won Summer League MVP honors, averaging 22 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals in his six games before the championship game. Anderson had a solid outing in the finals scoring 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists as his team beat the Phoenix Suns 93-90.

The Spurs were led by Becky Hammon, a former WNBA star, and the first female full-time assistant coach as well as the first female to serve as head coach in Summer League. Under her tutelage, the Spurs went 6-1 in Las Vegas, racking up six straight wins after their opening night loss.

"You never know what your journey has in store," Hammon said after the game. "You just work hard and keep your nose to the grind. You do things the right way, you treat people the right way, and good things happen. I'm just thankful that [Spurs coach Gregg Popovich] trusted me with the guys in that locker room, and that those guys trusted me back."

As noted by a Sports Illustrated report, the Spurs became just the third Las Vegas Summer League champion since the league installed a tournament-style format in 2013.
