Apple Follows Facebook and Microsoft and Releases Government Data Requests in Response to Ed Snowden & NSA Revelations

Everyone in America has been gathering facts about the recent NSA revelations brought to light by intelligence worker, Edward Snowden.

He released slides that show surveillance program PRISM and that they had direct access to servers for large companies like Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Verizon and others.

Sunday night, Apple was the latest company to release info on the government's data requests.

Apple released a statement saying that it received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests for customer data from U.S. law enforcement from last December to the end of May. They said somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or Apple devices were asked for specifically in the requests.

The company said that the most common request "comes from police investigating robberies and other crimes, searching for missing children, trying to locate a patient with Alzheimer's disease, or hoping to prevent a suicide."

"Apple has always placed a priority on protecting our customers' personal data, and we don't collect or maintain a mountain of personal details about our customers in the first place," said Apple's statement. "There are certain categories of information which we do not provide to law enforcement or any other group because we choose not to retain it."

Apple still claims that the government did not have access to their Apple servers and found out about PRISM only after news outlets began asking questions following Snowden's news.

Along with Apple, Facebook has said that about 9,000 to 10,000 requests were made in the last 6 months of 2012 from government. Microsoft also said around 6,000 to 7,000 requests were made to check out their accounts and devices.

It is interesting that all of the numbers released by the three companies are in the same ball park of requests.

We will see what other companies come out in the coming days and weeks with more information as well.

What do you think about the companies coming out? Do you think they are telling the truth?
