Andy Mineo's Rap Coach Under Fire for 'Misinformed' Statement; Indie Emcee Defends Christian Hip-Hop from 'Erroneous Claims'

Andy Mineo's upcoming album is receiving a ton of hype and according to his rap coach, Ray Rock, the young emcee is bringing something to Christian Hip-Hop that is lacking. However, one fellow Believer and rapper thinks these comments are misinformed.

Rapper CONQUEST, wrote a blog post on I'm On That Next Next called "10 Reasons Why Andy Mineo's 'Rap Coach' is Misinformed About Authentic Hip-Hop in CHH." CONQUEST had to speak about Ray Rock after a couple of comments he made in an interview with Rapzilla.

"The main thing every Christian hip-hop album is missing is that authentic hip-hop sound with samples," Ray Rock told the hip-hop publication. "A Christian hip-hop album usually sounds more digital. This album sounds more authentic because of the sample feel."

He then compared Mineo's next album to the likes of what many consider a modern day hip-hop classic, Kanye West's Late Registration and J. Cole's latest masterpiece, Forest Hills Drive.

CONQUEST served his rebuttal immediately in the beginning of his article, "Really Ray? EVERY Christian Hip-hop album is missing that? You may wanna rethink that statement," he wrote.

The emcee first and foremost wanted to clarify that he is a fan of Mineo and his music, and is in no way attacking or discrediting him. He also said, he has a personal relationship with Ray. However, he found Ray Rock's comments highly offensive because of what he called "erroneous claims."

"...There was one major statement that Ray made in 'hyping up' Andy's LP that many Christian hip-hop artists (including myself) found highly questionable, misinformed, and honestly, borderline ridiculous," he said. "RAY ROCK suggested that the 2nd ANDY MINEO album will be bringing back something that's missing from EVERY CHRISTIAN HIP-HOP ALBUM & CHH in general: Authentic Hip-hop with the use of sampling & sampling techniques."

CONQUEST goes on to write that Ray Rock has showed "either his lack of knowledge or awareness" of Christian artists who have done just that same thing in the last five years. "Many may mistakenly take Rock's comments as fact, without really doing the research because y'know....Mineo's working with super 'real hip-hop' producer ILLMIND or whatever..."

CONQUEST argues that plenty of "Next Up" Christian emcees have been putting out "hip-hop classic & masterpieces." He then listed 10 names, himself, Eshon Burgundy, Jerrell, JGivens, B. Cooper, Wit & Dre Murray, Jackie Hill Perry, Selah the Corner, Righteouz Knight, and Ruslan. He also gives a description of specific albums and music each artist has done, which can be read on his post.

"I don't think it was malicious, I think it was a grand oversight and/or a lack of knowledge about what the BODY OF CHRIST is doing in music as a whole...and for that, he should be educated & given GRACE," he concluded. "I pray that one's POPULARITY & STATUS doesn't diminish the value & excellence of others who may be less popular."
