New Apple iPen Stylus News, Rumors: iPad Pro to Launch with Smartpen Accessory?

Reports have surfaced that Apple is in the midst of developing a stylus it plans to sell parallel to the larger iPad Pro, which is rumored to measure 12.2-inches and 12.9-inches diagonally.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple is set to unveil the stylus along with the new iPad in the second quarter of 2015. He cites in his AppleInsider report that the California-based company has recently filed a number of stylus themed patents.

A report by The Telegraph, for its part, points out that Apple has had a history of filing several stylus-centric patents despite the fact that no official Apple stylus product has hit the market as of yet.

The list of recent Apple patents filed, as reported by the Daily Mail, include "Input Device Having Extendable Nib" (awarded in March 2014), detachable modules for camera, audio recorder, laser pointer, and power source (filed in February 2014) among 22 other separate patents for a "smart pen."

In the AppleInsider report, Kuo said that the future could see the stylus supporting 3D handwriting as well as wireless charging, but noted the features most likely wouldn't be included in any 2015 release.

The respected analyst also speculates that Apple's stylus could be marketed as a separate product, instead of being bundled with a new iPad.

Kuo likewise suggested that the development of a stylus could address Apple's educational and corporate customer groups, which would complement split-screen multitasking, which he says could be a future innovation in a future iOS.

Former Apple chief executive Steve Jobs famously voiced his dislike of the tech accessory. "Who wants a stylus? You have to get them and put them away. You lose them. Nobody wants a stylus," he said back in 2007.

Apple's current flagship tablet, the iPad Air 2, measures 9.7-inches diagonally, much smaller than the rumored new iPad and its alleged 12.2-inches to 12.9-inches.
