911 Memorial News: Derek Jeter Helps Terminally Ill Woman Who Lost Father On Horrific Day

Derek Jeter

New York Yankees Captain Derek Jeter recently came to the aid of Brielle Saracini, a person who the MLB HOF met 13 years ago after her father Victor (the pilot of United Flight 175) was killed as a result of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001.

"You've got to stay positive," said Jeter to Saracini two months ago, according to the Daily News, "You shouldn't worry about statistics or what anybody says. You are going to beat this. Everything is going to be great."

Saracini is currently battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, after the aforementioned form of cancer was discovered in 2013.

"I'm one of the lucky few to have a special connection with him," said the now 23 year-old woman who reflected on her friendship with Jeter, "He's so much more than a baseball player to me. He's a mentor. He's someone I look up to, because of the way he treats people. He is someone who has helped me through a lot of dark times."

Saracini previously wrote the following letter to the Yankee legend 13 years ago.

"Dear Derek Jeter, My name is Brielle Saracini. As you have heard, there was a horrible accident that involved the Twin Towers, there was a hijacking on a plane. Terrible people are in this world, but you and I both know that. . . That horrible hijacking happened to my father. My father was the pilot, Captain Victor J. Saracini," wrote Saracini in the letter.

Jeter also reflected on his relationship with Saracini after he met the girl, 10-years-old at the time, who wrote him a letter after she and her family lost their father in 2001.

"(Brielle) has been tested numerous times and lived through quite a bit. She's a very strong person," said Jeter.

"Any time someone is faced with adversity and they approach it the way that she has, in a positive way, that's inspiring. When you're in a situation like that, a lot of times people take the 'Why me?' approach and feel sorry for themselves. She didn't have that."

Jeter will retire at the end of the 2014 season on Sunday, September 28 at Fenway Park against Yankees' rival Boston Red Sox at 1:35 pm EST.
