'Where Hope Grows' Down Syndrome Actor David DeSanctis Shatters Stereotypes in New Video Campaign [SEE HERE]

The filmmakers of Roadside Attractions' WHERE HOPE GROWS produced "Shattering Stereotypes," a short video created to combat negative stereotypes and hurtful misconceptions to inspire young people living with and to educate those without disabilities.

It is estimated that more than 3.2 million American kids will be bullied this year according to National Association of School Psychology. Bullying is considered the most common form of violence that is experienced by young people.

WHERE HOPE GROWS will be released on May 15 in theaters across the country, and fans will be introduced to newcomer David DeSanctis, a young man with Down syndrome who is defying the odds and shattering stereotypes for people living with disabilities.

In the "Shattering Stereotypes" video, David along with Trevor Hendershot, Marcie Landeros and John (JT) Tucker are featured, and each appear holding a rock as metaphor with a word that best describes them - including dancer, athlete, rapper and star.

With over 100,000 views to date, the video hopes to 'shatter stereotypes' with an uplifting, positive and encouraging message.

In the film, David plays 'Produce', a charming, enthusiastic grocery store clerk who provides patrons with daily encouragement and words of wisdom. But, despite his positive outlook, he is continually overlooked for "Employee of the Month," despite his best efforts and admirable customer service. When cast in the film's starring role, the director (Chris Dowling) asked David if he could read; David licked his finger to turn the first page of the script and speedily memorized 130 lines.

Roadside Attractions' WHERE HOPE GROWS has broken new ground by casting David in a lead role. He lights up the room with his charismatic, funny and smart personality. At 22 years-old, he is a Louisville native who has a passion for motivating others and prides himself on his abilities rather than his disabilities. When cast in the film's starring role, the director (Chris Dowling) asked David if he could read; David licked his finger to turn the first page of the script and speedily memorized 130 lines. An ardent music lover, David used his own self-curated music playlists to help memorize scenes and for dance breaks. He can also cite thousands of song titles, lyrics and artists off the top of his head.

Winner of the 2014 Heartland Film Festival Audience Choice Award, WHERE HOPE GROWS is the moving story about former professional baseball player Calvin Campbell (Kristoffer Polaha) who was sent to an early retirement due panic attacks at the plate. Even though he had all the talent for the big leagues, he struggles with the curveballs life has thrown him. Today he mindlessly sleepwalks through his days as copes with the challenges of raising his teenage daughter (McKaley Miller). As he continues in a slow, downward spiral, a chance meeting with the most unlikely person - Produce, a young-man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store - invigorates and awakens his life.
