Christian Based Film 'The Shack' Selects Octavia Spencer to Play God

Portrayals of God in Hollywood have been played by some big actors, and now Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, most known for her role as Minnie in The Help, is the next actor to step up and play God in the upcoming film adaption of New York Bestseller's The Shack.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Spencer said her role as God would be daunting but she is up for the challenge, "Those are huge shoes to fill," she said. "Morgan Freeman has done it and he's been quite effective. I'm just going to try to bring some wisdom to it...It's overwhelming."

Spencer also said that she will not have any particular prep work for the role. "You don't prepare for God."

Lionsgate Studios obtained the rights to The Shack in 2013. The 2008 novel by William P. Young was self-published and has sold over 18 million copies worldwide in 39 languages, according to Variety. The success of this Christian novel has been attributed mainly to word of mouth in Christian congregations, social media sites and radio stations.

The Shack is about a man by the name of Mackenzie Allen Philips who is devastated over her daughter's mysterious disappearance during a family vacation. Reports later showed that evidence found in an abandoned shack pointed to his daughter being murdered. After four long years of grief, Philips receives a note addressed as "Papa" which is his wife's nickname for God. He goes back to the shack and there will change the course of his life forever.

Spencer, after obtaining an Oscar for her performance in The Help, is set to appear on the big screen once again in a role for the Divergent sequel Insurgent. She will also star in a Voltage film called Father and Daughters.

Lionsgate has yet to announce a release date for The Shack.
