‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ Box Office: No. 1 Opening of The Year - Trails Behind Previous Installments

The first series part of Lionsgate's 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' was released in the U.S. on November 21, and despite having the top spot in the best debut's of 2014 in the North American box office, it is still behind the previous two movies in terms of profits.

According to early Friday estimates, the latest movie from 'The Hunger Games' trilogy will rake in $125 million in the U.S. box office, significantly less that what the previous installments of the series have earned.

Friday projections stated that the opening of the movie will earn about $54 million, followed by Saturday's ticket sales which is expected to be about $43 million and Sunday's showing, which will likely reach $29 million.

If the numbers will hold, the 'Mockingjay' opening weekend in the U.S. box office will be over 20 percent below the earning of the first two movies. Last year's 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' finished with $158 million in its opening weekend, while 'The Hunger Games' finished with $152 million.

But despite trailing behind the last two installments of the trilogy, 'Mockingjay' still managed to top the opening sales of 'Transformers: Age of Extinction', which raked in $100 million in its domestic debut in June.

However the business during the opening of 'Mockingjay' on Thursday was still 14 percent below the $19.7 million earned by the first Hunger Games movie, and 33 percent behind the massive Thursday opening earnings of 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire', which reached $25.3 million.

Several economists and observers believe that the freezing weather that has hit the East Coast, Upper Midwest and the Northern Plains, has largely affected the figures shown by 'Mockingjay'. In addition, the fact that 'Mockingjay' is not shown in Imax because 'Interstellar' is still showing at venues is believed to be a factor in the movies ticket sales.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter says that 'Mockingjay' will make up for the difference in domestic sales in the foreign market.

The movie has been the top opener in foreign countries, including Benelux and Scandinavia.

On Wednesday, 'Mockingjay' opened in nine countries, including France, and on Thursday, it opened in 59 markets, including Korea, Mexico, U.K., Australia, Germany and Italy.

The movie now marks the biggest day and date release in 2014 when it opened in another 17 markets on Friday, including Spain.
