'The Giver' Movie will Donate 50 Cents of All This Weekend's Ticket Sales to NEA's Read Across America

'The Giver' movie to donate 50 cents per ticket sold to literacy programs such as NEA's Read Across America during this labor day weekend.

The promotion is called "Ticket to a Better World" and will is a partnership with the movie's production groups Walden Media and the Weinstein Company along with the National Association's Read Across America.

"The Giver affirms our belief that individuals must have the freedom to pursue and fulfill their dreams.  That freedom is precisely the gift that reading and literacy provide. Every time you put a book in the hands of a child, you unleash the power of imagination and hope that can change the world. We are honored to partner with Read Across America to launch the 'Ticket to a Better World' campaign and get books into the hands of kids who need them the most," said Walden Executive Francis X. Flaherty in a press release.

"Books open the floodgates to understanding and to learning," said Anita Merina, national coordinator of NEA's Read Across America in the release. "This generous initiative will help us bring books like The Giver, onto the shelves and into the lives of so many children. At a time when access to books is so critical in the learning life of a child, this initiative is very exciting indeed."

'The Giver' hit theaters on August 15 and is an adaption of Lois Lowry's children's novel.

It was directed by Phillip Noyce and is based on the successful 1993 novel of the same name. The film stars Bridges, Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift. Rush, plays Fiona, will be Jonas' love interest. Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard play the roles of Jonas' parents.
