"The Bible" Producer Roma Downey: Diogo Morgado Will "Define the Role for Generations"

When married producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey set out to make The Bible, History Channel's epic new docudrama, they new casting would be difficult. Immortalized by her role in Touched By An Angel, Downey was forced to play "older" Mary out of default. Finding the actor to play the Son of God proved a little trickier.

"We actually were only six weeks away from beginning principal photography and we still had not cast the role of Jesus," Downey told People magazine. "To say that we were anxious is an understatement."

Out of desperation Downey sent an email to all of her industry friends with "Looking for Jesus" as the subject.

After one of her friends suggested Portuguese film star Diogo Morgado, Downey decided to give him a shot. After watching a taped audition from Morgado, Downey was anxious to schedule a meeting. Downey was worried, however, that a meeting in person would be prove impossible for the Portugal-based actor.

"I was a little disheartened and didn't know logistically how I was going to make that work," says Downey. "I spoke to his agent and he said, 'Actually, he's traveling and in Los Angeles.' I said, 'Hallelujah.' "

After two episodes featuring Diogo Morgado as Jesus, it's obvious the 33-year old actor was born for this opportunity.

"I think he will define this role for generations," she says of Morgado. "He's just a beautiful actor inside and out. This is going to make him a big star."

Tune in this Sunday for the Easter finale of The Bible at 8/7c on History Channel. The conclusion will feature scenes from the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ.
