Teenage Girl Invents 'The Hot Seat' Device to Help Prevent Babies Being Left in Hot Cars; Says It's Her 'Dream' to Help Save Lives (VIDEO)

On average, 44 children die each year because they are left unattended in vehicles. This prompted 14-year-old Alissa Chavez to do something about it, and in turn, led to her invention of the life saving device known as "The Hot Seat."

Chavez, from New Mexico, is making headlines for a product she invented a couple of years ago. She became fed up with all the tragic stories about infants losing their lives due to negligence, and made moves to do something about it.

She stated in her Indiegogo campaign that from 1998-2013, 600 children have died in a hot vehicle, "The majority of children that have become victim to these terrible tragedies are under the age of 2 years old," she said, ""The Hot Seat" is a safety device that can put an end to tragedies like these."

Chavez' invention is an alarm system that can be attached to any child car seat. It is designed to sound an alarm if a child has been left in a vehicle and the caregiver is about 40ft away.

The young girl was raised around children because her mother runs an in-home childcare business, "Having children in my life on a daily basis... I could not imagine losing any of these kids to an accident like this. I knew there had to be a way to stop these tragedies," she maintained.

"I began to work on "The Hot Seat" with a few alarms that I found at local stores. Later that year I competed in my school's science fair with my product," she explained, "Later that year my product was featured in a segment on the local news and I submitted a patent for "The Hot Seat." In August 2012 I received a patent for my invention."

Chavez is currently raising money on Indiegogo.com to help advance the product and produce a prototype. Chavez has been inventing products since she was 11-years-old and said "It is my dream to make items that can save lives or just make simple things in life easier."
