'Star Trek 3' Release Date, Latest News: New Movie Gets New Team, Simon Pegg to Co-Write Script

Apart from being a great actor, British star Simon Pegg is reputed for being a wonderful comedy scriptwriter who has worked on films like 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' in the past. Now, Pegg has perhaps taken up the biggest challenge in his career - co-writing the script for 'Star Trek 3.'

According to Christian Today, Pegg will now work together with Doug Jung to write the script for 'Star trek 3,' as they will be trying to bring in plenty of changes in the storyline before the target release date - July 2016. One of the changes in the 'Star Trek' series includes a brand new director, Justin Lin, who earlier directed 'Fast and the Furious' movies.

In fact, Pegg will be required to work twice as hard because he will still continue to reprise the role of the comic chief engineer of the 'USS Enterprise,' Montgomery Scotty.

The report says that Pegg will now be joining a new team challenged with following in the footsteps of predecessors like Jung, Patrick McKay, John D. Payne and Robert Orci.

As Pegg is a writer of repute, he will be expected to give a big boost to help revive the 'Star Trek' franchise's credibility with its wider fan base. Many had criticized recent installments of the franchise as being more like Star Wars than Star Trek. Director J.J. Abrams, who directed the previous installments of the franchise, was criticized heavily by some for making 2013's 'Star Trek: Into the Darkness' and 'Star Trek' in 2009, too much like 'Star Wars'-like films.

Now that an entire new team is behind 'Star Trek 3,' fans are hoping the upcoming movie will be able to crush all the criticism it has been drawing.

Although the title of the film and the plot are yet to be released, Paramount Pictures is hopeful that the movie will be completed by July 2016 and be ready for release in time for the 50th year celebration of the original 'Star Trek,' which was first released in September 1966.
