'Sonic Mania' Release Date, Latest News: Evokes More Than Nostalgia?

When Sega announced the release of "Sonic Mania" for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, the news was viewed with suspicion especially with the pipelined Project Sonic 2017.

However, more and more people have been warming to the 2D game not just because "Sonic Mania" evoked familiar feelings, but also for the gaming experience itself.

According to Ollie Barder of Forbes, the franchise's popularity has waned over the years not least due to Sega itself for putting out bad games in recent years.

But he said that Sega made a very smart decision by insisting that "Sonic Mania" be playable in 2D but using the current technology which allows for more crisp graphics and more seamless movements due to the higher framerate.

A Eurogamer news article revealed that "Sonic Mania" seems to capture the gameplay and overall style of "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" which should be a treat for fans.

One of the best decision by Sega was to collaborate with Christian Whitehead along with PagodaWest and Headcannon. Whitehead, for his part, is an avowed fan of the classic 16-bit game. In fact, he developed the "Retro-Sonic" game.

Whitehead's long ties to the game is what makes "Sonic Mania" work.

Meanwhile, Venture Beat said that the news about the release of "Sonic Mania" was understandably met with some reservations, particularly because of the nostalgia aspect which typically skews perspective about a certain game.

However, "Sonic Mania" does work not least because it looks and feels a lot like "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" but much better due to the graphics, animation, soundtrack and gameplay.
